Abstract Wall Pieces

The Abstract series of Wall Pieces features heavily textured porcelain tiles which are inspired by the dynamic effects of flooding. Close observation of the ragged lines of debris deposited by receding floodwaters, reveals intricate patterns of interwoven vegtation. The lapping action of the waves sifts material  forming graduated bands of texture. Wafer thin slivers of porcelain and fine pieces of leather hard clay are used to recreate these patterns. The use of different whites focusses attention on texture with watery copper oxide and glazes flowing over the surface, picking out the detail.

During the winter months when the River Derwent floods into the Ings, vast tracts of standing water fill the fields. Tree trunks and grasses poke through the floodwaters creating ephemeral patterns of reflections.
